SAGE HEALTH: Meet Dr. Brent Patterson

Dr. Brent has a love for the art, science, and philosophy of chiropractic, and ultimately his patients’ well being. He is an avid sports enthusiast with a strong background in sports-related injuries. After pursuing 1000 hours interning at the sports medicine facilities at SRJC and SDSU, he decided to attain his massage license at IPSB massage school. After 7 years of successfully treating clients’ acute and chronic injuries with massage, exercise, and nutrition, he went on to obtain his Doctorate of Chiropractic at SCUHS. Additionally he pursued advanced training in Graston technique and Myofacial release technique. Dr. Brent is currently treating former heavyweight champion of UFC and Pride fighting, Antonio Rodrigo “minotauro” Nogueira.

Dr. Brent’s chiropractic goals are to restore proper motion and alignment to all joints of the body, relieve muscles and fascia of tension, and improve overall function and well being. Prevention is the best remedy for disease, so eat well, think well, and move well.

What is Graston?
"The Graston Technique Instruments allow a deeper, more sensitive palpation and treatment of fibrotic restricted tissue."The Graston Technique originally developed by athletes, is changing the way clinicians including athletic trainers, chiropractors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and patients view treatment of acute and chronic soft tissue injuries. Graston Technique is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The Technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.

Graston Technique protocol, increases the amount of fibroblasts to the treated area. That amount of inflammation to the scar tissue helps initiate the healing cascade. The structure of the tissue is rearranged, and damaged tissue is replaced by new tissue. Ice is then applied to reduce the pain and exercise is implemented to increase function and range of motion.

What is M.R.T.?
Myofascial Release technique refers to the manual massage technique for stretching the connective tissue and releasing adhesions between it and muscles, membranes and bones. Injuries, stress, trauma, overuse and poor posture can cause these restrictions. This is usually done by applying shear, compression or tension in various directions as the patient moves through a particular range of motion.
